Today Reminder (Writings in the sand) – 19 March 2018

A reminder for today
This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. (John 8:6)

Why did Jesus write in the sand? Let me give you a little context on where we are. Jesus was a Rabi travelling the land teaching the people. Now Joe Amaral wrote in his book about Jesus teaching in the ways that Rabi’s taught in those days and one of those ways is something called remez which means to hint. Rabi’s did not like to give the full answer, they wanted the learner to understand for himself or rather discover for himself.

Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand (John 7:2). Now in John we see that it is the last and great day of the feast on which Jesus goes to the temple. In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, if any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (John 7:37-38).

Now to give a little more context. On that day (the great day of the feast) the priest will walk down to the pool of Siloam. Now living water is very important in the Jewish culture. It came from rain, springs or rivers. Now the pool of Siloam was spring filled which means it was filled with living water. The priest will take a jug and fill it with this water and take it back up to the temple where he then pours this living water over the tabernacle asking God to bless them with living water. Now as this was happening Jesus walked into the temple saying that He is the living water. He says that he that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Now we know that some accepted Him but many also rejected that He is the messiah. He was then kicked out of the temple and as He got there He was confronted with this woman that was convicted of adultery. They wanted to see what Jesus would do. Was He going to condemn her or is He going to have her excommunicated. Instead of responding Jesus stooped down and wrote in the sand.

Now, this will open the whole passage for you. In Jeremiah 17:13 it says: O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.

Now this is the remez where Jesus is calling them back to time where God would send His living water to the temple and whoever rejected him, their names will be written in the dust.

Lord, thank you once again for opening your word to and confirming your love for us. Let us flow with living water as we carry your gospel and open our hearts and minds so that we can hear your voice and do your will. In Jesus name.

Have an awesome day dear friend of Jesus.

Cheers
